Five Songs the Inspired Bo Jo Jones and the Great Lummox latest release - Gods of the Gallows

Song 1

Bo Jo Jones - Maria I’m Drunk by Travis Scott

At the time I produced the beat for Gallows music was going through a heavy Travis Scott phase. I listened to Rodeo countless times, and conceptually I think it’s a seminal work in 21st century hip hop. Insofar as musical techniques, the frequent beat switches and mood of the album was a large influence on the structure and instrumentation choice of Gallows.

Song 2

The Great Lummox - Mr Inside by Tuka (feat. Solo)

Both Tuka and Solo are two of my favourite rappers in the Australian scene flexing their abilities as lyricists, rappers and singers. This tracks’ introspective and self aware nature over a dreamy, catchy but clunky beat certainly influenced my initial approach to songwriting. Gallows evolved from a real life experience that drove me into a headspace challenging the lines of reality and paranoid fantasy.

Song 3

Bo Jo Jones - Headstone by Flatbush Zombies

FBZ are hugely underrated in my opinion. I think the main portion of The Gallows’ beat would not be out of place if it had a “prod. Erick the Architect” attached to the end of it. They are masters of creating a hard hitting-song around a sampled melody groove.

Song 4

The Great Lummox - IV. Sweatpants by Childish Gambino

I was listening to a lot of Donald Glover during the making of Gallows. Im highly inspired by his creativity and honesty - whilst delivering a diverse range of high quality art - especially his music. Although Gallows differs sonically, Gambinos music certainly is a constant inspiration for me as an artist.

Song 5

Bo Jo Jones - Still Cold / Pathway Private by Night Lovell

I’m yet to find a heavier 808 sound than what you hear in this song. The dark, brooding and aggressive mood carries over into the mix of our song. When the beat switches at the end of Gallows especially you can hear the influence come through in the synths and drums.
