Getting to Know: Aunty Social

image description

Aunty Social is the bedroom-pop project of Tronoto 24 year old - Daniella Gritto. She writes introspective Rnb influenced tracks that look to share her experiences and help others who might be going through the same. It is authentic, pleasing and sounds so so good.

How’s life in Toronto?

It’s lovely! I just moved downtown and I am in awe everyday at how awesome Toronto is. Still haven’t been to the CN tower though and I’m okay with that.

You are writing some really beautiful music with some lovely and innovative sounds. I am particularly a fan on the wobbly synth on ‘Travelling Circus’ and the way it interacts with your vocal melody. Are you drawing inspiration on your instrumentation from anywhere or is it simply a product of what instruments you own?

Thank you!! I actually did not write the wobbly synth part, it was my lovely co-producer Sam Arion. We are both pretty obsessed with Synth instrumentation and if I could pin it down to an inspiration, I’d say 80’s new wave really peaked it.

Can you tell us a bit about Travelling Circus? What’s it about, where does the name come from?

The name Travelling Circus came from a poem I wrote last year where I used places, things and situations to try and explain the feeling of being out of place. The full line is “I am the travelling circus, laughed at by decade-old museums.”

I wrote my lyrics using the self-deprecating thoughts that fuel social anxiety. I tried touching on other facets surrounding social anxiety, especially the lack of understanding from an outsider perspective. Social anxiety manifests in so many different ways and in my particular situation, I would overcompensate to make sure that those around me didn’t see my social anxiety, which is just one big ol’ paradox.

Have soup as the only meal for the rest of your life or only have one outfit for the rest of your life?

What kind of soup? Can I choose which soup? Will I have to heat it up myself? Will I have to cook it myself or will there be freshly made soup in my mailbox each meal? Do I have to wash the outfit every night? Or will there be the same outfit but duplicated for each day of the week? What about the different seasons? Will there be a summer version, winter version etc? Let me know

What inspires you to do what you do with your music?

My love for it, but also challenging myself to become a better, more confident and healthy minded individual.

Any plans to come to Australia?

HECK YA!!!!!!!!! It’d be a dream.
