Getting to Know: Bianca Wilson

How is life at the moment? Are you working on any interesting projects?

Very very busy. Just had my first market stall, which went quite well. Now planning some more markets and potentially some exhibitions around Sydney in the near future.

You state that you have a fascination with architecture and it clearly resonates in your work. Do you have any favourite buildings?

It wasn’t until my trip to Japan that I became so fascinated with architecture and it became the focus of my paintings. I loved the concrete buildings covered by thousands of tiny pastel ceramic tiles. I later learnt it was more of a practical choice than an aesthetic one due to their damp tropical climate eroding any exposed concrete. But I found the patterns of the tiles really beautiful. I also noticed how often their stairwells were built on the exterior of the building, and I loved the repeating patterns that they made too. From there I began to notice these patterns more and more, particularly in brutalist architecture where there’s often many large modular components grouped together. I’m not sure I have a favourite building in particular but I love The Sirius apartment building and UTS tower in Sydney for those same reasons.

What is your aim with your art?

I like to strip down the detail in a particular landscape and focus on the repeating patterns that are often overlooked. Ideally the result is something quite vague yet still familiar and homely. I love when people tell me that a particular piece resonates with them in some way - that it reminds them of where they live or somewhere they’ve been to. At the heart of it though, I paint because I find the act of it quite meditative.

Who are your favourite artists?

At the moment I’m really inspired by Ana Popescu (@ana__popescu), Kelly Anna (@kellyannalondon), Laura Berger (@lauraberger_) and María Medem (@mariamedem). But my favourites are always changing, it’s so easy now to find and support incredibly talented artists.

Do you have a favorite artwork?

After seeing her exhibition in Melbourne last year, anything by Del Kathryn Barton. I’ve always loved her work but seeing the scale of it and the amount of detail up close in real life was really special.

Can you tell us a bit about your process when it comes to your art?

I’ll always have a few ideas lined up based on places I’ve travelled to, and also looking out from my balcony always give me inspiration. I probably spend more time figuring out the composition and drawing it up than actually painting. But when I do get to start painting that’s my favourite part. I feel like I get to zone out from everything else and just focus on that.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life (the simpsons conundrum) what would it be?

Hmmmm the classic white ABBA jumpsuit.
