How’s things?

Great! We’re about to play a really cool show in Paris in a couple of hours. We just started to tour recently after our album release and it just feels good to be back on stage!

Your tracks have really beautiful characterisation with in the lyrics. How do you go about creating these characters?

Most of our songs are about ourselves or what we feel about life at a certain moment. We believe songs, like ideas, are floating in the air, it’s just a matter of how and when you’re able to reach them. Some people call that inspiration. But most part of the work consist in sitting on a chair.

What is the best gig you’ve been to in the last year?

A French Canadian act, Hubert Lenoir, in a tiny club in Paris (La boule noire). This dude sure knows who to give a proper show.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life. I call this the Bart Simpson conundrum. What would it be?

We both like double breasted suits. They’re convenient, you can wear them with anything, and you get to feel like a 1920’s gangster from time to time...

The Video for You and I is a wild adventure through heaven, hell, ramen and beautiful girls. What was the inspiration for this video?

The main inspiration was Tintin or early TV cartoons like Mickey Mouse or Tex Avery. We wrote with Victoria Lafaurie, my girlfriend, who directed it. We wanted to fuck around with the concept of good and evil in a cartoonish way. Then the video might have a much deeper subtext. On the other hand, the biggest movie reference is a Japanese « ramen western » called « Tampopo ».

Are there any fellow Parisian artists you are loving right now?

Quite a lot! And the cool thing is that we get to work with a lot of them. We worked with Soko on the Ann wants to dance video. Adrien Durand from Bon Voyage Organisation produced our latest album (Night Sketches). Pablo Padovani from Moodoid shot the Theatrical State of Mind music video. My girlfriend and I sung on Polo&Pan « Canopée » track. Antonin, our bass player also has a really cool eponym solo project and so on…

On that, what is the French music scene you are in like?

Really diverse. There is not an actual « scene » with a unique musical gender but you got many great band out there: La Femme, Feu Chatterton!, Polo & Pan, Oracle Sisters etc...

What is your studio space like?

It’s an ancient cave in Le Marais district, just beneath Ulysse’s Flat. It’s really cool, with drapes on the ceiling, a few cheap synthesizer, quite a lot of early drum machines, some amps & good sounding guitars. All that you need to make music!

Do you have any favourite album artworks?

The Sparks: Propaganda. It’s just the best looking duet band album cover ever made. It’s elegant, weird and fun.
