Getting to Know: Shannon and the Clams

image description

Shannon and the Clams are a four piece from Oakland, California, who create music that finds itself being reminiscent and nostalgic yet with innovative aspects, that make it feel like you are listening to a brand new memory from your grandparents past. Their music uses do wop sensibilities with modern rock melodies and guitar work that allows for an emotional connection and a chance to lose yourself in the bright guitars and beautiful vocals. It is really just lovely to listen to, and we haven't been able to get enough of it since their first release.

How are things?

Things are great! Super busy which is a bit of a battle because I only recently started to value my free time. However, it feels so good to be busy, it reminds me that I'm ALIVE.

Your music is always evolving and getting more and more accessible and yet it is always staying true to the 1960’s aesthetic you have created. What is it about this sound that you feel so connected with?

I'm not sure. It's just the default sound in my mind. I never sit down and tell myself I'm gonna write a 60's song. Most the music I love and grew up with is from the 50's-90's so you'll get hints of it throughout. I can't help it!!!

You played at Golden Plains 2019, which is a seriously good festival. How do you find playing festivals compared to venue gigs?

Golden Plains was the best festival I've ever played!! The opening ceremony at the beginning was totally incredible as were all the other bands. I'm so grateful to have been introduced to Marlon Williams! It's rare I love modern music so much but I am OBSESSED. I think the difference between a festival and a bar show is that generally the bar show people are there to see YOU. Festival, some people know you, many don't, many come just to be together and hear music and experience the overall vibe and trust the curation of art a the festival.

Do you have a memorable gig that stands out for you?

One of my most memorable gigs was at the Funtastic Dracula Canival that takes place in Benidorm in a UFO shaped bar with a pool in the back yard that has mini London bridge over the top.

What inspires you to do what you do with your music?

I feel like I can't help but do it. It's cathartic, it's my way of sharing with people. It's my way of harnessing my demons and riding them through the world.

If you had two hours to live right now. What would you do with your time?

Swimming pool, lots of dogs, trampoline, sushi buffet, all my friends and family and maybe some poppers for fun!
