Guitar Art: Federico Giungi (Italy)

We got in touch with Italian Luthier (maker of stringed instruments) to find out a bit more about his amazing guitars.

What got you into the idea of starting your business?

The will to become a luthier has been a causality… I was tired of my old job as bartender, even if it gave me a lot of possibilities all round the world (also in Australia, Perth) but after almost 8 years i decided to make a change in my life. First of all i’m a musician and I have a luthiery guitar made by a luthier, who lives near my hometown. I was so amazed by his job that I decided to ask him how could I become a luthier. He replied me that if i really wanna try to do this, I could go in his laboratory and, with no expectation, I could start to help him with small duties trying to learn… of course no money was involved, just for my own knowledge. After 1 year spent with him, I opened my own laboratory and built my first guitar. My friends believed in me, and they let me repair their instruments or commissioning some guitar or bass guitar… In my first year, all by myself, I've built 6 instruments... and I am just at the beginning. I wasn't looking for any idea in particular, I never liked to do replica guitars so I took a blank piece of paper and start to draw few sketches. I am an artisan and most of all i’m Italian…so i forced to keep up the Italian made! Seriously i don’t want and i can’t do the same work like everybody else. Even when i was a musician i never played a cover like the original one, in my opinion, if you wanna reply something, you always have to give it your touch. So i decided almost immediately to give up with replicas, giving to my imagination all the mojo’s that needs I’m not saying that is wrong to build famous replica guitars, but there’s no feeling in this…you are creating something that already exist…you are creating nothing. You aren't leaving anything to the guitar history. You are just a fish in the sea… I am and want to be different.

How do you come up with the ideas for your designs?

Unfortunately there are not so many materials to choose… the wood is a must… it’s true that you can make a guitar with almost everything like plexiglass, alluminum, carbon fiber and who knows what else… but there is a reason for why guitar are made of wood for more then 100 years.

My favourite wood's are the one's which come from equatorial place of the world, first reason is for the sound that you get from that species of wood and also for the is the smell when you work on that, the colour and the grain…

There are some species of woods like Hawaian Koa and Mexican King wood or Ziricote that are insane, it seems that they are a modern art paints

Three songs you are listening to and loving now?

  • zz top blue jeans

  • charles bradley why it’s so hard

  • john frusciante the past recedes

Favorite guitar that isn’t your's and favourite that you have worked on?

I'm a Les Paul lover and almost all the Gibson, but the one that i really love is a ’52 les paul

How can we get your guitars?

My business at the moment is really small and based local…not worldwide yet, like I said before I just started few years ago and right now I cannot afford to produce a big amount of guitars, every guitar is handmade and an unique piece. The only way to try or buy them is to come to visit me in my hometown Ancona-ltaly, otherwise, if is enough, you can check my YouTube channel and take a listen to the demos.

You can also contact me on my profiles facebook, instagram and reverb.com
